Starfield, like many other RPGs, gives players the freedom to role-play however they wish in a wondrous sci-fi world. There aremultiple optional quests, skills, ships, and traits a player can look into that can hone their Starfield experience into one that follows a certain path.
One such role that many players have been desperate to experience inStarfieldis that of a Space Pirate though it can be difficult to figure out how to make this dream a reality. When exploring the vastness of space in Bethesda’s Starfield these are the ways a player can role-play as a Pirate from the background, to the factions they should join.
What Background Would A Pirate Come From
A Space Scoundrel
Before players can actively start their life as a Pirate inStarfield, when creating their custom character they should be looking at what the most suitable background would be for that character. Out of all the interesting options for backgrounds, one of the most suitable for someone who sees themselves as a pirate of space would be the Space Scoundrel background.
This person has always been on thequestionable side of the lawas they may have done some fairly devious things in the past that have taken them to where they are right now. Not to mention the skills given to them may be quite necessary in the player’s future.
Ranks
Pistol Certification
Rank 1: Pistols do 10% more damage Rank 2: Pistols do 25% more damage Rank 3: Pistols do 50% more damage Rank 4: Pistol kills grant a 25% critical hit chance for five seconds
Piloting
Rank 1: Can utilize ship thrusters Rank 2: Increased ship turning rate and maneuverability Rank 3: Unlocks the ability to fly Class B ships Rank 4: Unlocks the ability to fly Class C ships
Persuasion

These Traits Add More Story
Wanted, Neon Street Rat & Introvert
To make a player’s playthrough feel different to their others, there are multiple Traits they could use to add some new elements to this exciting space adventure. One of the most important traits for a Pirate would be Wanted. While a player minds their own business –dodging the possible bountiesthey have already picked up – they may encounter other bounty hunters who will simply never leave them alone.
On top of this traits like Street Rat will make the most morally nefarious city the player’s stomping ground giving them even more dialogue options there while Introvert will give players a much-needed boost to their stats while exploring.
Description
Wanted
Players deal extra damage when their health is low, but they are always being hunted by armed mercenaries.
Neon Street Rat
Players get special dialogue with those in Neon City, but their bounty is increased with every other Faction.
Introvert
Anything that uses Oxygen uses less when the player doesn’t have a human companion with them but uses more when they do.
Some Pirates Are Skilled With These Perks
Deception, Manipulation & Security
There are countless interesting perks players should consider investing points into in Starfield, besides the three they are already given for the Space Scoundrel background. Three other exciting picks a player should attempt to master are Deception, Manipulation, and Security as these three will best come in handy when attempting to role-play as a Pirate.
Deception allows a player to urge an NPC to hand over their valuables when doing piracy acts, combining this with Manipulation means a player can command an NPC to do what they want them to. Finally, Security allows a player to open those pesky locks found around the world. Besides these three perks, there are many other intriguing options a player may wish to experiment with.
Deception
Rank 1: Ships 10% Stronger automatically surrender to piracy attempts & contraband scans are 10% less effective Rank 2: Ships 20% Stronger automatically surrender to piracy attempts & contraband scans are 20% less effective Rank 3: Ships 30% Stronger automatically surrender to piracy attempts & contraband scans are 30% less effective Rank 4: Ships 50% Stronger automatically surrender to piracy attempts & contraband scans are 50% less effective
Manipulation
Rank 1: Force targets lower than player’s level to follow commands for a limited amount of time Rank 2: Force targets 10 levels higher than the player to follow commands for a limited amount of time Rank 3: Force targets 20 levels higher than the player to follow commands for a limited amount of time Rank 4: Manipulated targets now follow commands for even longer
Security
Rank 1: Can Hack Advanced locks and have two automatic attempts Rank 2: Can hack Expert locks and three automatic attempts, rings are now highlighted blue if they can be slotted Rank 3: Can hack Master locks and have four automatic attempts Rank 4: Expend a digipick to remove keys that can’t be used and have five automatic attempts.

Vasco Doesn’t Care
Unfortunately, all the human companions that are members of Constellation cannot stand when the player does anything wrong, this includes any sort of piracy or threatening the lives of simple NPCs. This is also why it’s such a good idea to have the Introvert trait since the player is unlikely to want to gain disapproval from these members.
Thankfully, players can still have some sort of assistance. Vasco is a robot that carries little opinion on the world around him, therefore a player needs to not worry about what he may disapprove of as that’s never going to happen. He also doesn’t get in the way of theIntrovert traitand therefore players can expect to still have this boost to their Oxygen.
Following This Faction Is Crucial
Crimson Fleet
Players are likely to have been attacked by the Crimson Fleet during their adventures, especially when traveling between different planets. Although a player is likely to have killed plenty during the start of their adventure, it is also possible to join the ranks of these Space Pirates.
Players must first grab a bounty for themselves by doing a devious task that will grab the attention of the UC Fleet. They will come to the player asking them to be an undercover agent for them. Players can either agree to help or refuse (the more likely option) this will then lead them to join the Crimson Fleet and hopefully soar through their ranks.
Pirates Usually Take To The Sky In These
Crimson Fleet Wraith II – Class C
Sincejoining the Crimson Fleetfaction the player will have access to all the Faction’s vendors, this includes the chance for the player to get their hands on the most pirate-like ship of the game, the Crimson Fleet Wraith.
Players can purchase this ship from the Key Ship Tech for 240,000 ship credits. It’s incredibly impressive for taking down enemy ships though it could use a boost to its cargo, not to mention that none of this cargo is shielded either. With the necessary tweaks done by the player, Crimson Fleet Wraith is sure to be a spaceship players will enjoy blasting through space with.

Pirate Armor For A Deadly Pirate
Pirate Assault Spacesuit
While there are in fact better spacesuits for a player to wear such as the Nishina Spacesuit which can be earned by completing the main story of the game. For a more realistic Pirate role-play, players will want to steal the clothing from the various pirates they are likely to encounter on their adventurers.
Just because they themselves are a Crimson Fleet member doesn’t mean they won’t be attacked by those individuals, therefore it’s completely okay for a player to defend themselves andsteal their spacesuit. These spacesuits can come in various qualities which means players should always be looking out for better improvements.
The Best Defense Is A Great Offense With These Weapons
Keelhauler
Continuing the Crimson Fleet quest line will reward the player with the deadly revolver Keelhauler from Delgado. Out of all the guns a player should be consideringwhen role-playingas a Pirate this is by far one of the best.
First, the player will already be doing an increased amount of damage with it due to starting with the Space Scoundrel background; this combined with the already increased damage the revolver does, means any enemy is sure to drop quickly with only a few hits.
