Space exploration is whatStarfieldis all about, so gamers will have hundreds of different astronomical objects to scan and investigate. Before landing, players can set their landing target wherever they’d like while on their ship, which means they can exit the ship on any part of a planet or moon. It’s important for players to learn how to open their surface map in these circumstances so that they can check nearby points of interest.

This guide will show players how they can open their surface map inStarfieldand take a look at what each astronomical object has to offer so that they can fully explore it before heading to another area of the galaxy.
How to Open the Surface Map
There are two types of maps inStarfield: the Starmap and the surface map.Gamers can access their Starmap at any time by opening the Starmap section located in the top left corner of the Pause menu. With the Starmap, gamers can zoom in and analyze planets and moons, but they can also zoom out quite a bit and take a look at several different star systems.
On the other hand, gamers can also open the surface map. However, this is only available once they’ve landed.Players can access the surface map of a planet or a moon by taking out the Scanner and then selecting the Surface Map option.

Players will be able to see any points of interest nearby as well as useful information that they might’ve surveyedusing the Scanner.
Surface Map Features
Players shoulduse the Scanner to complement and improve the data displayed on their surface map. With the Scanner, gamers can scan any point of interest markers that appear nearby, and doing so will add their name to the surface map as well as a percentage meter of just how much the player has explored the landmark; if they’ve fully explored it, an “Explored” note will appear beside the location’s name on the surface map.
Gamers can also open the Starmap to check where certain markers are displayed on the planet’s surface, so that they can decide which areas are worth visiting or revisiting.

This feature makes it easier for gamers to keep track of the areas that they haven’t visited yet, which might come in handy when they’re trying to complete the survey of a planet to collect andsell Survey Slates.
Starfieldis now available for PC and Xbox Series X/S.
