Twitchstreamer Adin Ross had an incredibly strong performance on the streaming platform to start 2022. However, that momentum was derailed when Ross appeared to be permanently banned in April due to a homophobic slur said on anotherTwitchstreamer’s broadcast. To the surprise of many, Twitch overturned Ross' permanent ban and brought him back to the platform. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the controversial return has lifted Ross' Twitch channel to even greater heights.

A specific explanation for the increased viewership for AdinRoss' channel isn’t clear, but this trend ofbanned Twitch streamersreturning to a larger audience is common. Audiences tend to check out controversial content creators to see what’s going on. It helps that Ross has been streaming consistently since he returned to Twitch, too, as its allowed him to fully capitalize on the wave of support from within his viewership.
Just because Ross is seeing a surge of viewership now doesn’t mean it’s going to last, of course. The viewership peak for Ross since his return was in the first three days. Since then, viewership averages have been shrinking. Since the peak of 115,000 on June 8, hisTwitch viewershipis now down to averaging around 80,000 each day. That’s still obviously very impressive, but it shows that this wave of success may continue to trend downwards in the coming weeks and months. Keep in mind Ross was closer to 40-50,000 average viewership prior to his ban.
For those unfamiliar with the controversy surrounding Adin Ross, the Twitch streamer was allegedly on a phone call with a friend who was streaming during the conversation. Ross didn’t realize it was being broadcast, as he used a homophobic slur to insult someone. This type of language, particularly when showing bigoted views, has historically beenpunished severely by Twitch. Ross was off Twitch for 7 weeks before Twitch allowed him to return. No explanation for overturning the ban was provided.
Adin Ross grew in popularity in part due to his friendship withNBA superstar LeBron James' son Bronny James. Coincidentally, his channel peaked in popularity in April 2021 following two quick temporary bans, one of which was also for a homophobic remark. Ross has streamed onTwitchsince October 2018.
