In video games, protagonists can come in all shapes and sizes, but more often than not, they’re designed to be easy on the eyes, even drop-dead gorgeous. But gaming fans may be surprised to learn that Captain Price from theCall of Dutyseries is the hottest male video game character.
A recent study has procedurally identified the top 10 hottest male characters in video games, perhaps surprisingly landing Captain Price in the number one spot. The study conducted by Top10casinos was compiled by using a method they call the “Golden Ratio,” which is a calculation method that predicts the perceived attractiveness of the subjects that are inputted. According to the calculations from the study,Captain Price fromCall of Dutyis the most attractive male video game character ever created.
To determine the rankings, a master seed list of live-action characters was generated from a predetermined list of 50 of the most iconic video game characters of all time from GamesRadar. Only characters with computer-generated human faces were selected. Characters such as Doom Guy fromDoomandMaster Chief from theHaloserieswere excluded, as they wear a battle helmet throughout the games. The study then made use of a computer vision algorithm to approximate the geometric golden ratio of each character’s face using images taken from Google images with a clear background and no facial expression. After all that, it gets a bit technical, but the bottom line is the higher the golden ratio score, the more attractive the face.
The top 10 contains some instantly recognizable names, and arguably some could be considered more attractive than others. Among the names on the list that some gamers might find surprising isNiko Bellic ofGrand Theft Auto 4, a seemingly odd choice. Here’s the top 10 in full:
Captain Price -Call of Duty88.90%
Geralt of Rivia -The Witcher86.99%
Commander Shepard (male) -Mass Effect86.79%
9. Sam Fisher -Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell81.11%
10. Nathan Drake -Uncharted79.39%
There are some interesting results for fans to quibble over. Most would probably agree though, thatNathan Drake ofUnchartedis objectively more handsome than Niko Bellic ofGTA.Although, it’s easy to see how some people might feel differently and think Niko is more worthy of a magazine cover. The study also found that Geralt of Rivia scored an impressive 86.99% out of 100, ranking just after Captain Price, however, upon further insights, Henry Cavill’s on-screen version of Geralt only managed a Golden Ratio score of 69.82% in a separate TV show poll, a difference of 17%, meaning he’s no match for the video game character.
