With its predecessor succeeding at the box office, it’s no surprise thatTerrifier 3is already being planned. According to director and writer Damien Leone, the film is already growing big enough to split into a fourth entry.

Terrifier 3is currently in the early stages of development. Its predecessor,Terrifier 2,has grossed $7.63 million at the global box office against a $250,000 budget. Reviews have been strong, and reports have stated that audiences have vomited and fainted during screenings of the film, a sign thatArt the Clown might just be the next great horror villain. Leone has previously stated that he intends to bring backTerrifier 2’s heroine, Sienna Shaw (Lauren LaVera), back in a third installment.

In an interview withVariety, Leone stated that thehorrorfilm was growing too big to encapsulate onlyTerrifier 3,suggesting aTerrifier 4may be on the horizon. “I pretty much have the entire treatment ready for ‘Part 3,’ but it’s getting so big that it could potentially split into a ‘Part 4’ because I wouldn’t want to make another 2-hour 20-minute movie. So we’ll see," Leone said. One of Leone’s fears appears to be running the franchise into the ground with too many sequels. “My fear is that eventually the well is gonna run dry, we’re gonna wind up jumping the shark, there will be nothing left to say with this character,” he said. “It happens with a lot of franchises that I’m still a huge fan of. I’ve watched all these ‘Part 10s’ and ‘Part 13s,’ but sometimes that could really ruin the entire franchise.”

It’s basically tradition by this point foriconic horror movie slasher villainsto have an absurd number of sequels. Freddy, Jason, and Micheal Myers all have had numerous entries in their own franchise, and all have featured entries that are contested by the fanbase. It’s good that Leone is conscious of that fact, or else, eventually, Art the Clown may be terrorizing people in space.

The fact that Leone is experiencing such success with his Art the Clown story is inspirational. The character began in a series of short films that were eventually compiled in 2013’sAll Hallow’s Eve,a horror anthology movie. Leone’s work was not an instant success, but his perseverance and desire to tell the story of Art the Clown seems to have paid off.
