Fans ofThe Last of UsandThe Last of Us 2are celebrating Outbreak Day today, which in light of the COVID-19 pandemic has beenrenamedThe Last of UsDay. The studio behind the popular series, Naughty Dog, is fueling this celebration with new announcements and merchandise for players.

For those that don’t know,The Last of UsDay falls on September 26 to commemorate the day that the cordyceps infection reached its peak in the series' lore. Traditionally, Naughty Dog celebrates the day by releasing new content or information aboutThe Last of Us. This year is special because a sequel toThe Last of Uswas finally released, meaning there’s plenty for the studio to announce in relation toThe Last of Us 2.

One big announcement is that Naughty Dog is giving away allThe Last of Us 2PSN themes and avatars for free on the PlayStation store until Monday. This includes the recent theme that shows Abby’s boat on the beach from thefinalThe Last of Us 2menu screen. There are also free avatars for all the major characters including Ellie, Dina, Lev, Abby, and Jesse. Most of these digital perks only came free with deluxe editions or pre-orders ofThe Last of Us 2,so now is a great time to claim these free items for any fans who missed out.

Naughty Dog has saved plenty of announcements forThe Last of UsDay, including the reveal that aThe Last of Ustabletop board gameis in the works. Other highlights have been a new limited-edition vinyl soundtrack, Ellie and Joel statues, posters, and a photo mode contest where players can win aThe Last of Us-themed DualShock controller.

The current next major thing onThe Last of Uscalendar is anHBO television adaptation of the series. There’s no word on when the TV show will go into production, but now thatThe Last of Us 2has finally been released Creative Director Neil Druckmann said he will have more time to work on the series withChernobylwriter Craig Mazin.

Fans can also hopefully expect more news aboutThe Last of Us 2’s upcoming multiplayer modein the coming months. Naughty Dog scrapped the additional multiplayer mode forThe Last of Us 2during production due to time constraints, but the studios has announced it will be creating a multiplayer mode as a separate entity.

The Last of Us 2is available now on PS4.
