Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest event was capped off with the blockbuster reveal forThe Last of Us Part 1, a remake of the originalLast of Usgame built to take advantage of the PlayStation 5’s added horsepower. The Last of UsPS5 remake trailershowed off the game’s improved graphics and performance, while also giving fans a look at some redesigned character models. One character that was briefly seen in the new trailer has now been given a close-up comparison that properly spotlights her new look.
Tess is an important character in the originalLast of Usgame, and she was spotted multiple times inThe Last of Us Part 1trailer. However, the trailer didn’t really give fans a close look at Tess, instead keeping the focus squarely on protagonists Ellie and Joel. Naughty Dog has since released a brief video comparing Tess from the PS5 remake to how the character appeared in the original PlayStation 3 release.

The new version of Tess fromThe Last of Usgives the character much more detail than the original PS3 version. The animation has been significantly improved as well, making Tess in the PS5 remake seem much more lifelike. Similar improvements could be spotted with the character models forEllie and Joel, so it seems safe to say that these big visual upgrades are across the board.
The Last of Us Part 1should bring the original game more in line withThe Last of Us 2from a visual standpoint, though it remains to be seen if there will be any story changes to bring the two games closer together as well. The Last of Us 1endingwas somewhat tweaked inThe Last of Us 2for story purposes, so it’s possible that will be changed in the remake. However, no changes like that have been announced at the time of this writing, and as far as anyone knows,The Last of Us Part 1will be a 1:1 remake as far as the story goes.
The same can’t be said for the gameplay though, withThe Last of Us Part 1making changes to enemy AI along with other adjustments that should improve the overall experience. As far as features go,The Last of Us Part 1will seemingly be missingThe Last of Us' Factions multiplayer. Instead of featuring multiplayer, the game is focused on the single-player story seen in the base game and theLeft Behindexpansion. This may be disappointing news to some fans ofLast of Usmultiplayer, but the good news is Naughty Dog is working on a brand-newLast of Usmultiplayer projectwith more news to come next year.
The Last of Us Part 1launches September 2 for PS5 with a PC version also in development.
