Not even a day afterThe Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdomwas released, the highly-anticipated Nintendo title was review-bombed on Metacritic by some users for various reasons. However, that has not stopped fans ofThe Legend of Zeldaseries from responding to these bad-faith reviews with positive scores of their own as a countermeasure.Despite the efforts of the review-bombers,The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdomis consideredamong the highest-rated games ever made. On Metacritic, the game holds an aggregate score of 96 at the time of writing, based on reviews from various media critics. It is also the third-highest-rated Switch game on the site, behind onlyBreath of the WildandSuper Mario Odyssey, which both hold an aggregate score of 97. However, with nearly 200 user reviews, efforts to review-bomb the game have been met with just as stiff resistance fromZeldafans.RELATED:Beloved RPG Studio Helped Nintendo Develop Zelda: Tears of the KingdomEarlier today, according to Twitter user mrpyo1, people started review-bombingTears of the Kingdomwith scores of 0 and 1 in the hopes of dropping the score considerably. At one point, the user score was as low as 5.6. But, the negative reviews were met with fierce resistance from other users, as some have counteracted with scores of 9 and 10. While most of the reviews have addressed some of the legitimatecomplaints players have had withTears of the Kingdomin general, the low-effort reviews have failed to sway opinions of the game for the most part.
At the time of writing, the user score bounced back from 5.6 to around 7.9 and 8.0, with some minor fluctuations as user scores continue to be posted on the site. Recently,Metacritic and Fandom responded to the review-bombingof high-profile games, such as The Burning Shores DLC forHorizon Forbidden West, by removing the most egregious and unfounded scores from the site. Fandom stated that more tools to combat review-bombing will come over the next several months. But, when it comes toTears of the Kingdom’s user score bouncing back, it is not clear if this was due to the efforts ofZeldafans fighting back, the proactive removal of some negative reviews by Metacritic, or a combination of the two.
While Nintendo and their games have never been immune to legitimate criticism, such as the reviews left after therelease ofPokemon Scarlet and Violet, that has not stopped gamers from either defending or berating them. But in the case of Tears of the Kingdom, the reviews have clearly been in the game’s favor, no matter what the scores are.
