Metal Gear Solidfans were treated to quite a surprise during the May 24 PlayStation Showcase thanks to the reveal of not only aMetal Gear Solidcollection coming to PSN, but also confirmation that a remake ofMetal Gear Solid 3is currently in development.Metal Gear Solid 3is often cited as the pinnacle of the entireMetal Gear Solidfranchise thanks to its engaging survival mechanics alongside the series' trademark stealth action, as well as one of the most poignant narratives in all of video games. Interestingly, the remake has dropped the “3” from its title and has replaced it with the delta symbol (in other words, a triangle).

As far as what the name change of theMetal Gear Solid3remake may indicate, speculation has already begun regarding the significance behind the use of the delta symbol. While some have pointed out that the delta symbol has three sides and thus correlates to the game being a re-imagining of thethird entry in theMetal Gear Solidfranchise, others have also noted that the absence of Hideo Kojima’s involvement in the project may mean the new title is in reference to the title being a different game from the original. Whatever the case, it’s unlikely that the new title is a mere coincidence.

Hideo Kojima’s Absence May Have a Significant Impact on the Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake

The lack of qualityMetal Gear Solidcontent in the larger gaming landscape is indicative of the impact series creator Hideo Kojima had over each game’s design. WhileKojima was not the only individual responsiblefor bringingMetal Gear Solidto life and making it one of gaming’s most-loved franchises, it’s hard to argue against just how influential his vision and talents were behind the direction of the series (and, truly, stealth gaming as a whole). Since the very public falling out between Kojima and parent company Konami, it’s been a veritableMetal Gear-sized desert until now.

Fans ofMetal Gear Solidand Hideo Kojima are already cautiously optimistic regarding the remake of what is considered to be not only the bestMetal Gear Solidtitle but also one of the best PS2 games and one of the best games ever made, period. WhileDeltais likely to still include thesurvival elements and CQC from the originalMGS3, some of the stranger and more esoteric aspects of boss encounters might be cut in the remake.

How Metal Gear Solid Delta Can Honor its Source Material

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eateris still one of the best examples of 6th-generation game design alongside othercontemporaries likeResident Evil 4. Considering that many classics from the PS1 and PS2 eras are now receiving remakes, it was only a matter of time before Konami realized it was leaving money on the table without reviving theMetal Gear Solidfranchise. In remaking one of the best titles from the series, it will be important for Konami to not reinvent the wheel or try to fix what wasn’t broken.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eaterhas an opportunity to introduce a whole new generation of players to the greatness of the original, albeit with updated graphical fidelity and (hopefully) subtle changes to the game’s interface and mechanics.MGS3’s narrative is the gold standard of the series, and its gameplay still holds up as being enjoyable more than 15 years after its release. Thename change fromMGS3toMGS Deltamay be a simple way to entice new players alongside the dedicated series fans to play the remake, and there’s hope that Konami won’t change a winning team in the process.
