Just several months ago, inXile Entertainment launched its latest major game release,Wasteland 3. The CRPG was a highly anticipated sequel in the classic franchise, and wasinXile’s biggest game release yet. But it seems inXile isn’t finished with 2020.
The studio’s now confirmed that its virtual reality game,Frostpoint VR, is also on track to launch soon. Better yet, it’ll be releasing very soon. VR enthusiasts can pick up the multiplayer game on December 1.

For those who haven’t heard aboutFrostpoint VR, it’s a huge 20-person multiplayer game with first-person shooter combat. inXile describes it as atactical multiplayer game, but that better describes the squad-based competitive element, rather than the pacing. In motion,Frostpoint VRmoves quite a bit faster than more tactical FPS games likeRainbow Six: Siege. Of course, VR multiplayer games are ultimately quite a bit more tactical than non-VR FPS games, just due to the realistic aiming.
In a newly released launch trailer forFlashpoint VR, enthusiasts can see just what the game looks like in action. The trailer also confirms some of the game’s features, including a planned four maps at launch, multiple game modes, as well asPvPvE actionwith AI enemies. Some of those robotic Reclaimer AI enemies can also be seen in the trailer. Also shown is the arsenal available to players, displayed as a wall of guns. inXile says there are dozens of weapons and tools available to wield.
Additionally, inXile and publisher Thirdverse will be holding a launch contest to encourage a large playerbase to jump into the game from day one on. Climbing the leaderboards after the game launches can lead to prizes ranging from Amazon gift cards all the way up to anNvidia GeForce RTX 3080 graphics card. There are definitely worse ways of encouraging players to try and climb the leaderboards.
As fun and straightforward as an online multiplayer FPS is,Frostpoint VRis definitely a curiosity. Most of inXile’s games over the past 10 years have been CRPGs, after all. But in 2017, inXile did divert from its ways to releaseThe Mage’s Tale, a VR spin-off ofThe Bard’s Tale. inXile decided to follow upThe Mage’s Talewith something with bigger aims. And that’s howFrostpointcame to be.
Now thatinXile is owned by Microsoft, it’s unclear what inXile’s VR plans will be going forward. It may depend on how successfulFrostpoint VRis. Regardless, it’s fun to see a studio best known for CRPGs start experimenting with other game types that they’re excited about.
Frostpoint VRreleases via the Oculus Rift Store and Steam VR on December 1.
