League of Legendshas been around for more than a decade, and millions of people continue to play it on a daily basis. At its heart,League of Legendsis a team game, and each player has to pick a Champion. The game now has more than 150 Champions, all of whom have their own set of unique abilities.

Every single Champion is designed to fit a single role, whether it be Top Lane, Mid, Jungle, ADC, or Support. A Support Champion resides in the Bot Lane with their ADC, and for the most part, they are meant to provide crowd control, shielding, or healing. Other Supports tend to be initiators who can tank damage. There are plenty of traditionalSupport Champions inLoL, but there are several non-Support Champions who are surprisingly effective in the role.
10Cho’Gath: The Terror Of The Void
Cho’Gath comes from the Void, and that automatically makes himone ofLeague of Legends' most evil Champions.He can knock up enemy Champions with his Q, and his W unleashes a scream that can silence enemies. His E causes his basic attacks to shoot out spikes, which causes a slowing effect.
Cho’Gaths' Ultimate allows him to eat minions, monsters, or champions who have low health. Doing so will give Cho’Gath stacks, which cause him to grow in size, and he gains bonus health with each stack. If he has Tank items, Cho’Gath can become a virtually indestructible Support with multiple crowd controlling abilities.
9Ornn: The Fire Below The Mountain
A lot of players choose to play tanky Supports like Alistar or Braum, and Ornn would be a good way to counter these picks because he is a tank who deals extra damage to tanks. He can charge into the enemy team with his E, and he will knock opponents up if they are near walls. His W causes him to breathe fire, and it applies an effect that allows him to deal more damage to enemies.

Ornn’s Ultimate summons a giant ram that can knock up the entire enemy team. If played correctly, Ornn never needs to return to base because he can build items anywhere on the map when he is not in combat.
8Heimerdinger: The Revered Inventor
According to the lore, Heimerdinger isone of the most intelligent Champions inLeague of Legends, and he can be a very effective and annoying Support. With Liandry’s Anguish, Heimer can do an insane amount of magic damage, and his Ultimate enhances all of his abilities.
Heimerdinger’s Q allows him to place hextech turrets on the ground, and they can shoot minions and enemy Champions. These turrets would allow a team’s Bot Lane to constantly push their lane, and the enemy team won’t be able to push back because Heimer’s turrets will shred their health.
7Xerath: The Magus Ascendant
Xerath is a mage who can deal a lot of damage in Mid lane, and according to the lore,he is one of thestrongest Champions inLeague of Legends. His Q allows him to fire charged Arcane enemy in a straight line, while his W calls down a blast that slows enemies.
Xerath’s E shoots a ball of energy that stuns whoever it hits, and his Ultimate allows him to shoot up to five large blasts over a large area. Xerath has a decent amount of CC, which makes him a solid Support option, but what really makes him a nuisance is the obscene range of all of his attacks.
6Vel’Koz: The Eye Of The Void
Vel’Koz is another Champion from the Void, but unlike Cho’Gath, he cannot be played as a Tank. As a Support, Vel’koz’s main priority will be to damage and zone the enemy Bot Lane, and if the player builds Liandry’s Anguish and Demonic Embrace, they will literally melt the opposition.

All of Vel’Koz’s abilities deal damage, but his Q can also slow, and his E can knock up anything that gets caught in it. His Ultimate fires an energy beam in a moveable straight line, and it can tear through Champions, including tanks.
5Tahm Kench: The River King
He may not bethe best Champion for beginners, but Tahm Kench is still pretty easy to play, and he is a very good Tank. Thanks to his E, he can store a percentage of post-mitigation damage and use it as a shield, and he can then regain some of his missing health.
Tahm Kench’s Q is a tongue attack that deals a surprising amount of damage, and it can slow whoever he hits. His W is good for initiating team fights because he can dive into water and emerge from the ground, which knocks up anyone caught in the ring. His best Support ability is his Ultimate, which allows him to eat an ally if they are about to die.
4Anivia: The Cryopheonix
Anivia may not bea difficult Champion to play as, but she certainly does a lot of damage if she gets her combo off. Her Q fires a chunk of ice that slows whatever it hits, and a recast will stun the target. Her E shoots out freezing wind, and if it’s followed by her Q, the ability will do double damage.
Anivia’s W is arguably the most supportive part of her kit, as it creates an ice wall that can cut off an enemy’s escape. It’s a great ability to use when the allied Jungler is ganking.
Sion is classified as a Vanguard, which means that he can be played as atanky Support inLeague of Legends. He may not have crowd controlling abilities like Leona or Nautilus, but he can still knock up enemy Champions if he is able to charge up his Q, and he can temporarily slow an enemy with his E.
Sion’s W grants him a shield that deals damage upon a recast, and his Ultimate is great for initiating team fights since he charges straight into the enemy team. The best part about Sion is that he can be played Tank or Lethality.
2Veigar: The Tiny Master Of Evil
Other than Nasus, Veigar is theonly Champion inLeague of Legendswho can endlessly scale, which means that he can be played as a Tank or full damage Support. Veigar gains extra magic damage every time he kills minions with his Q, or if he hits an enemy Champion with his abilities.

Veigar’s Q shoots dark energy in a straight line, while his W calls down a large blast. He possessesone of the game’s best Burst Mage Ultimatesbecause it fires a massive ball of energy at an enemy, and it deals more damage depending on the target’s missing health. His E creates a circular wall that can stun enemies, and this ability alone makes him a versatile Support.
1Malphite: Shard Of The Monolith
He may not beone of the game’s most hated Champions, but Malphite can be a real nuisance, especially if he builds nothing but armor. Armor turns him into a Tank, and it strengthens the shield granted by his Passive. It also increases the damage of his W, which empowers his basic attacks.
A Tank Malphite is hard to take down, and his Ultimate is great for team fights because he flies into the enemy team and knocks up anything he hits. If someone chooses to play Malphite AP, his Ultimate will destroy a squishy enemy’s health.
