Fntastic’sThe Day Beforeis an MMO that has garnered itself a lot of interest for many reasons. Although many gamers are looking forward toThe Last of Us 2’s multiplayer component,The Day Beforeseems to be the perfect game to scratch that zombie survival horror itch. The game is set in a world that has been turned dystopian when an outbreak turns much of the population into violent, zombie-like monsters that crave nothing but raw flesh. To survive, players must scavenge for resources and supplies while looking out for the infected and hostile survivors. Making it inThe Day Before’s world requires quick reflexes, some good weapons, and a little luck.
Although it seems natural tocompareThe Day Beforeto games such asThe DivisionandThe Last of Us, the game has also been compared toNew World, which is an MMO by Amazon. Though there are some similarities between the two MMOs, there is no need to fear thatThe Day Beforemight cut intoNew World’s player base, because as there are enough differences to ensure that the games remain distinct.

How The Day Before Differs from New World
Though they are both MMOs,The Day BeforeandNew Worldhave drastically different tones.New Worldis set in the seventeenth century, and it has players exploring Aeternum Island, claiming new lands, and warding off enemies. Although it draws from real-world cases of colonialism, the game does not lean into realism and instead fully embraces fantasy elements. Aeternum Island is a world where monsters roam and supernatural forces can be encountered. Hence, in addition to regular weapons, players also have access to magic. BecauseNew Worldis centered on discovering new lands, much of the map is filled with untouched meadows and mighty mountainscapes that have yet to be conquered by humans.
In comparison,The Day Beforeis a much grittier gameset in the modern day. There are urban environments in which players can explore and search for resources. Most of the settings will be familiar to players, as they include sprawling malls, corner stores, and skyscrapers. When players do decide to travel to the countryside, skinny dirt roads and farmhouses will easily remind players that the world has been molded by humans.
Instead of taking on fantasy elements, the game aims for realism instead. If players cross paths with hostile survivors and manage to take out their opponents, they can loot their enemies for their clothes and any other valuables they may be carrying. However, making too much noise may attract the infected that can attack in hordes. There are vehicles available for players to use, but they will require repairs if they are damaged. Furthermore, although magic isnot present inThe Day Before, players do have access to guns that can be modified. For instance, silenced weapons are the perfect tools to use to eliminate foes without attracting the infected.
Though both games are MMOs, it is unlikely that they will have to share their player base.New Worldcaters more to players interested in fantasy realms and the thrill of conquering new lands. In comparison,The Day Beforeis geared towards players looking for a horror game that has them roughing it out in a post-apocalyptic world where both the infected and other players pose a threat. Most importantly, unlikeNew World,The Day Beforewill also receive console versions.
The Day Beforepromises a lot, but it is hard to not get excited about Fntastic’s upcoming MMO. Fortunately, the game carves a unique personality for itself that allows it to not step on the toes of Amazon’s own MMO.
The Day Beforeis scheduled to release on PC on August 03, 2025. PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions are also in development, though no release date has been announced.
