With the release ofWorld of Warcraft: Dragonflighttaking players to the Dragon Isles and coming to the assistance of the Dragonflights against an ancient threat, players are probably excited with the slate of new features theWorld of Warcraftexpansion is offering. On top of the new Dracthyr Race and the Evoker Hero Class is the Dragonriding mechanic, allowingWorld of Warcraftplayers to finally take to the skies using flying dragon mounts that boast incredible speed.

Compared to usual Riding options, Dragonriding givesDragonflightplayers the opportunity to use a myriad of special abilities to improve their flying experience. However, while there’s no mechanical difference with the initial slate of Drakes the game would offer, fans who want a more nuanced take on the aesthetics and lore aspect of their potential dragon rides might want to consider a few aspects when choosing their new favorite mount.
4Cliffside Wylderdrake
When players get theCliffside Wylderdrake, they may immediately notice its ram-like appearance. Its curved and pronounced horns are its main feature, coupled with the presence of fur below the chin that acts like a goat’s beard. Other than that, the Cliffside Wylderdrake appears like the typical drake, although with wings protruding from its muscular arms.
Bronze in color, the Cliffside Wylderdrake is implied to have been a part of theBronze Dragonflight, considered the protectors of time. While this seems cool as a concept, the constant presence of the Bronze Dragonflight for players - especially as a means to regularly relive previousWorld of Warcraftexpansions - may make these time-travelers rather too overrated to be considered interesting.

How To Acquire The Cliffside Wylderdrake
The Cliffside Wylderdrake becomes an acquired mount once players finish the “Cliffside Wylderdrake” achievement. More specifically, this achievement becomes accessible to players as soon as they finish the “Back to the Future” quest. However, players do so with a lot of risks at stake, at least in terms of the story. By the time players acquire the Renewed Proto-Drake, the Primalists have fractured the timeline in a bid to “create” a future where they reign supreme.

And it doesn’t help that even the Infinite Dragonflight, sworn enemies of the time-keeping Bronzes, are trying totransform Nozdormu into their leader, Muruzond. While the end of this storyline sees the Primalists on the verge of victory, the remainder of the Dragon Aspects seem to have a plan. Chronologically, this makes the Cliffside Wylderdrake the fourth and final Dragonriding mount players will acquire in the game.
3Highland Drake
Players familiar withWorld of Warcraftlore won’t be surprised about the Highland Drakeupon its acquisition. Being the Dragonriding mount that resembles the traditional drake the most, the Highland Drake is the drake that gives players the most feeling of being “at home,” especially in a foreign location like the Dragon Isles.
Befitting its name, the Highland Drake observes a particular regality in its appearance. Its blue skin implies its belongingness amongstthe magically-attuned Blue Dragonflight, although this drake doesn’t boost any magical abilities. Either way, the Highland Drake fits players looking for a more noble-looking dragon mount. The Highland Drake boasts long but stylish horns, slender wings separate from their toned arms, and a jawline shaped like an eternal smile. If there’s anything that can make players turned off from the Highland Drake, it’s the rather familiar appearance of most other drakes in the previous expansions.

How To Acquire The Highland Drake
Players get the Highland Drake once they finish the “Highland Drake” achievement in theWorld of Warcraftexpansion. This reward in particular is provided once players finish “Calling the Blue Dragons” in the main game. Chronologically speaking, the Highland Drake is the third mount players will gain in theDragonflightexpansion.
This quest is the fourth mission in the Azure Span story. As fans remember, the Blue Dragonflight remained one of the most fractured groups of dragons in lore due to their many losses in their conflict with both Proto-Dragon Galakrond and even against Deathwing. However, it’s in this chapter whereKalecgos, the new Blue Dragonflight Aspect, realizes that his Dragonflight only has a shot at victory against the Primalists once they are united.

2Windborne Velocidrake
Upon acquisition, theWindborne Velocidrakeis immediately unique in terms of its almost dinosaur-like appearance. Its green-skinned nature gives it a lizard-like appeal, save for the presence of fur in the form of a brown mane. Its wings are connected to its arms through joints, though more muscular and thicker in appearance.

Compared to other Dragonriding mounts, the Windborne Velocidrake certainly gives a stronger “wild” appeal, especially with its description alone that implies the Velocidrake hunts better in plains. Befitting the more nature-leaningWorld of WarcraftClasses such as the Shaman, Druid, and Hunter, the Windborne Velocidrake is certainly a better choice for those who want more unique-looking mounts.
How To Acquire The Windborne Velocidrake
The Windborne Velocidrake becomes available toWorld of Warcraftplayers once they acquire the “Windborne Velocidrake” achievement throughout their exploration of the Dragon Isles. More specifically, the Windborne Velocidrake becomes a reward after finishing “Shady Sanctuary.”
This mission is the fourth part of the Ohn’ahran Plains storyline, where players need to reconnectQueen Alexstrasza of the Red Dragonflightwith Merithra of the Dream, leader of the Green Dragonflight. In this story, players need to help the Green Dragonflight rekindle with the local centaurs, but this immediately spirals into a civil war as the Primalists have also invaded their ranks. Chronologically, however, the Windborne Velocidrake should be the second Dragonriding mount players will acquire.

1Renewed Proto-Drake
When acquired, the Renewed Proto-Drakesummons a red-skinned proto-drake for players to ride. Given their nature as the smaller kin of thelarger proto-dragons, they do share some “primitive” features that aren’t ordinarily present in some dragons.
The Renewed Proto-Drake has scales with multiple rock protrusions, a large curved horn, as well as rugged fangs that give them a particular ancient “roughness.” Compared to other drake mounts that appear more stylish, the rugged and more ancient appeal of the Renewed Proto-Drake easily makes them the best-looking Dragonriding mount. This is perfect for players who want to brag about their visit to the last sanctuary of the Dragonflights thought to be lost across time.

How To Acquire The Renewed Proto-Drake
Players can acquire the Renewed Proto-Drake asa mount inWorld of Warcraftgameplayby accomplishing the “Dragonriding” quest. This is also the third part of the Waking Shores storyline.
In this story, players accompany the Dragonscale Expedition in the Dragon Isles, which then leads to the discovery that proto-dragons and the Primalists have begun their move to reclaim Azeroth for their own. Chronologically, the Renewed Proto-Drake is the first mount players will acquire.
